ENGINEER CONSTRUCTION 3

In this Engineer Construction 3 role with HII, you will plan, design, and oversee the construction of facilities at the Newport News Shipbuilding campus. The position centers on coordinating outside contractors, preparing estimates and construction plans, and delivering engineering support across technical services, project management, or crane engineering teams, all on site in Newport News, Virginia.

Responsibilities

• Plan, design, and supervise the construction of new or expanded facilities.
• Direct the design and construction process for facilities projects.
• Prepare architectural, engineering, and cost estimates, functional studies, construction plans, specifications, and schedules.
• Acquire and oversee external contractors.
• Recommend architectural and engineering design procedures and standards for facility planning and design.
• Supervise detailed design, budgetary costing, standardized construction, and final inspections of facility projects.
• Conduct construction surveillance to verify adherence to contractual requirements.
• Provide engineering consulting services to local and divisional offices.
• Review codes, calculations, drawings, specifications, constructability, and material selection or substitutions to support assigned work.
• Manage contractor activities, troubleshoot design or construction conflicts, offer technical solutions, perform project safety assessments and audits, ensure quality control and inspection to design standards, and prepare startup and commissioning documents including checklists, operating procedures, and training for all assigned work.
• Resolve engineering issues on site during construction.
• Investigate problems arising during testing and operations, implement resolutions, and direct re-testing to ensure satisfactory performance.
• Coordinate and manage multiple construction projects with diverse stakeholders, maintenance and operations personnel, and customers.
• Support facilities across technical services, project management, or crane engineering teams.
• Manage the design and construction of electrical, mechanical, and structural work and systems tied to utility infrastructure, buildings, and other industrial construction projects.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program (must have).
• Alternative recognized degrees that may be accepted in lieu of an ABET engineering degree: Construction Engineering, Project Management, Construction Management, or a relevant Construction degree.

• Career path options include: PhD with 0 years of experience; Master’s Degree with 3 years of relevant professional experience; Bachelor’s Degree with 5 years of relevant exempt experience.
• Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• The following Bachelor degrees may be used in lieu of an ABET Engineering Degree: Construction Engineering, Project Management, Construction Management, or a relevant Construction degree.
