Controls Engineer III - In Person
Job Description
Columbia Machine is seeking an in-person Controls Engineer III to lead PLC-driven equipment design releases and manage a productive product line from Vancouver, WA.
Responsibilities
- Provide direction for the product line and drive improvement projects
- Support fellow engineers in project execution
- Apply electrical and control principles independently to design challenges
- Assess equipment performance scopes and requirements
- Review and revise electrical schematics as needed
- Specify and verify electrical components included in equipment Bills of Materials
- Review, create, and modify PLC and HMI programs and related software
- Define requirements and test motion control features and performance
- Troubleshoot equipment operation and communication networks
- Collaborate across multiple projects in a dynamic team setting
- Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) per design and procedures
- Create and update operator and maintenance manuals
- Communicate with customers clearly to meet expectations
- Design and evaluate systems using principles of power management and human-machine interfaces
- Drive department efficiency by delivering on schedule and reducing non-value-added work
- Provide technical information in response to questions and requests
- Analyze cost-benefit scenarios to propose equipment or process improvements
- Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations; advise on required actions
- Maintain knowledge through training, publications, networking, and professional engagement
- Identify short- and long-term engineering issues and recommend actions
- Contribute to team goals and be willing to take on new assignments
- Travel up to 15% to support customer needs
Requirements
- PLC and HMI software and programming experience
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- AutoCAD experience
- Visual Basic familiarity
- Rockwell RSLogix 5000 PLC controls experience
- Rockwell closed-loop VFDs and servo drives/controls
- FactoryTalk experience preferred
- Strong computer and technical aptitude
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Analytical mindset and problem-solving ability
- Project and process management capabilities
- Clerical/secretarial skills as part of responsibilities
- Bachelor’s degree required
- 8 to 10 years of relevant work experience
- Interest in supervisory PC controls for equipment or process controls
- Background in process control systems
- Experience analyzing results and planning workflow across multiple projects

Compensation
