Senior Electrical Controls Engineer
Job Description
The Senior Electrical Controls Engineer will own electrical controls and software from concept through commissioning for customized industrial automation systems, with a hands-on emphasis on controls architecture, system integration, and on-site startup.
Responsibilities
- Create and deploy PLC software architectures for bespoke machines and systems
- Develop scalable, modular control code
- Own the IO structure, tag naming conventions, alarms, and diagnostic logic
- Enable database communications and capture production data
- Integrate vendor equipment including conveyors, barcode scanners/printers, vision systems, and robotics
- Program and/or integrate industrial robots (Epson RC+ or Fanuc experience a plus)
- Configure industrial networks and communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, OPC-UA, etc.)
- Define control panel architecture, hardware selection, and network topology
- Review electrical schematics and panel designs (panel build may be outsourced)
- Ensure designs comply with NFPA 79, UL 508A, and NEC standards
- Support FAT, SAT, and on-site commissioning activities
- Troubleshoot complex system issues under real-world production conditions
- Assist with root cause analysis and corrective actions
- Support customers during startups and early production runs
- Produce clear documentation including operation descriptions, IO lists, and network diagrams
- Collaborate with project management on scope definitions and engineering estimates
- Contribute to the ongoing improvement of internal controls standards and templates
Requirements
- 7+ years of experience in industrial electrical controls engineering
- Strong PLC experience in Allen-Bradley Studio 5000 or Omron Sysmac Studio
- Solid understanding of IEC 61131-3 programming (Structured Text and Ladder)
- Proven experience owning full machine controls, not just subsystems
- Experience integrating vendor equipment and third-party automation components
- AutoCAD Electrical experience
- Comfortable debugging systems during FAT and startup
- Ability to work independently and make sound engineering decisions
