Job Description

The Structural Forensic Engineer role at Nederveld Inc. is based onsite in Detroit, MI. This position combines field investigations, office analysis, and laboratory work to determine root causes of failures affecting a building's structure and envelope. The successful candidate will take a hands-on, research-oriented approach with minimal design duties, applying physics and engineering principles to the built environment and producing engineering reports that document findings.

Responsibilities

Conduct in-field and testing facility failure analyses with hands-on examination and testing.
Document factual findings and finalize comprehensive reports.
Perform technical research and literature reviews to support conclusions.
Apply engineering theories and knowledge to real-world case studies.
Complete assignments in a timely manner in accordance with client requirements.
Adhere to ethical standards in all activities.
Communicate complex issues clearly to non-technical audiences through written reports.

Requirements

Self-motivated and proactive approach to work.
Strong problem-solving skills.
Highly detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy.
Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
Licensed Professional Engineer (PE).
Valid driver's license in good standing with demonstrated safe driving habits.
Ability to pass a background check as required for the position.
Master's degree in civil engineering.
Ph.D. in civil engineering.
At least 5 years of supervisory or project management experience.

Position Type and Hours

This is a full-time position. Some flexibility in hours is permitted, but the candidate must be available during the standard work hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Physical Demands

Combination of fieldwork, travel-related tasks, and sedentary work.
Regularly required to drive, stand, sit, walk, reach, type, talk, hear, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, push, pull, carry, and lift up to 50 pounds.
May be required to traverse wooded or uneven terrain, enter structures, use ladders, walk on roofs, access small spaces, and work in various weather conditions.

Travel

Regular travel is required as part of the Structural Forensic Engineer role. Some overnight travel may be necessary.

Job Description

Great Lakes Engineering Group is seeking Bridge Inspection Engineers at multiple levels (I through III) to join its Detroit, MI field operations on site. These roles involve inspecting in-service bridges and culverts, performing load rating calculations, and drafting reports and permits, all while leading field teams under the MDOT, AASHTO, and FHWA standards. A bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering is required, and the position offers a salary range of USD 95,816 to 115,391 per year.

Responsibilities

Identifying, measuring, and quantifying deterioration on various material types
Field documentation including notes, drawings, and photos
Preparation of photo logs
Drafting various bridge inspection reports
Assist with obtaining permits necessary to perform fieldwork
Assist with load rating calculations including preparation of hand calculations and load rating models
Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) whenever working conditions require safety equipment
Willingness to work at heights up to 100 ft, in and around flowing water, from various watercraft, and around heavy traffic
Willingness to work extended hours, including nights and weekends as project demands
Able to work outdoors in Michigan year-round
Able to learn how to operate a bucket truck with vertical reach up to 45 ft
Use various hand tools including chipping hammers, measuring tools, and NDT equipment
Assist with scheduling field dates and coordinating with traffic control contractors, MDOT Reach-All, railroad flagging, and others
Perform routine bridge inspections as a Qualified Team Leader (QTL) within Michigan
Assist with the preparation of proposals
Draft bridge inspection reports including scoping, in-depth inspections, detailed inspections, fracture critical inspections, scour inspections, and more
Lead the process of obtaining permits necessary to perform fieldwork
Schedule and coordinate field work with entities that may include traffic control contractors and railroads
Work independently in the preparation of load rating models
Assist with mentoring Engineering Interns

Requirements

Possession of a valid driver's license with a good driving record
Ability to obtain Michigan chauffeur’s license and pass DOT physical within 12 months of employment
A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
